I thought it would be easy, I punched the state park into google maps, and voila, directions to get there. When we arrived at McCubbins Point, the signs said we were at the state park so we drove in. About 5 kms down the road, it was getting narrower and a bit rustic. Then there was a sign with a map. Awesome, let’s see where we are. Well, it turns out that this entrance to the park is only to primitive camping, there was no office. The map showed us that we were supposed to be on the other side of the lake (which was another 45 minute drive)
At this point, we were running low on gas as well. We found a little gas station along the way, and after chatting a bit gas station attendant, I showed her some Canadian Money, she was quite excited about the texture and the colours of the money.
On the road again, we then came to the town of Osage Beach and found some signs for the state park so followed the road. After getting to the end, it was also not the campground, it was just a marina.
I tried the Tom Tom this time and punched in campgrounds, and it found it for us, still another 4 miles down the road. We made it finally, but what should have only been a 2.5 hour drive took us 5 hours. We were happy to settle in the campground and relax for Thanksgiving weekend (Columbus day here in the USA).
Monday, we did a sani-dump and were on the road by 9am. The goal was to get to Oklahoma City. We made a stop in Galena Kansas along route 66 to see another 1930’s style Gas station where the truck that inspired Mater in the movie “Cars” was on display.
We then stopped for a late lunch break in Tulsa at a flying J / Denny’s and then were on the road again. About 30 minutes from our campground, there was a large plastic tube (at least a foot wide) in the middle of our lane and there was no way to avoid it. We hit it and it went under the RV. Joerg got off at the next exit to check everything and I saw it roll out from under the RV to the side of the ramp. It turns out the rain guard held it back from hitting the car on the tow behind us.
It now started to rain with 30 minutes ahead of us. We made it in time before the big storms hit. We are settled here in Oklahoma City for a week. I will tell you all about Oklahoma City next week.
